Phase Genomics cloud-based SaaS platform powers a suite of machine learning and genomic analysis tools to deliver industry-leading results in fields like personalized medicine, infectious diseases, agriculture, and research. We’re growing fast and are looking for talented software engineers to help build out our base software platform, web applications, cloud infrastructure, machine learning systems, security, and more.

POSITION

Phase Genomics is seeking smart, talented, motivated software engineers to design and build the infrastructure, tools, and user interfaces that power our revolutionary genomic analysis tools. We have engineering opportunities across a wide range of technologies, including both front-end and back-end web applications, data processing infrastructure, machine learning systems, and more. We are a cloud-native company built on AWS, taking advantage of services like EC2, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, SageMaker, and Lambda. Our web applications leverage additional state-of-the-art tools such as Django, Terraform, and Ansible. We develop primarily in Python and Javascript, though we will use whatever language is the right tool for the job.

Every engineer is given the opportunity for technical, architectural, and product-level ownership of their areas, and is expected to deliver world-class results without needing to be micromanaged. Our team is composed of people who are capable of owning a problem space top to bottom, yet still collaborate to deliver great results across the team. We like to hire great people who can be turned loose on hard problems and trusted to deliver.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Software engineers are responsible for

• Conceiving, designing, implementing, and maintaining software components in one or more product areas. Areas include:
  • Massively parallel big data analysis on EC2.
  • Cloud-based task orchestration.
  • Website database and UI.
  • Data analysis and report generation.
  • Online productivity and collaboration scenarios.
  • Process performance metrics and optimization.
• Running services in a DevOps model.
• Helping define company technical and business strategy.
• Supporting users with documentation and direct communication.
• Being a good problem solver. As a startup, we have a number of problems that need good brains to work on them, including non-software problems.

REQUIREMENTS

While we are open to a broad range of backgrounds, a successful candidate will likely have the following qualifications:

• B.S. or B.A. in computer science, software engineering, bioinformatics, or other technical fields with a programming bent.
• 2-4 years’ experience in developing web-based software in an industry or academic setting
• Experience in at least one of the following software development settings:
  • Web development
  • Distributed data analysis
  • Cloud-based task orchestration
  • Bioinformatics
  • Data science
  • Machine learning
• Experience with genomics or biological computing is a plus, but not required.
• Comfort working in an early-stage company, where flexibility and teamwork are a must.
• Position may be in-office, remote, or somewhere in between. About half our software team works fully remotely, and the rest work-from-home at least a few days a week. All employees come to Seattle at least once per year for company-wide meetins and events.
